Interested in pursuing a degree at one of Europe’s many worldclass universities, but in need of the required qualifications? The English for Academic Purposes Training (EAP) programs combine the development of academic skills in the English language with field specific knowledge, preparing you for a smooth entrance into a Bachelor-degree programme at ELTE or a university outside of Hungary. The EAP programmes will allow you to reach B2-level language proficiency (CEFR) in just one year.

Background
The EAP-programs take a field-centered approach to teaching English. They focus on developing communicative competence in a specific discipline and are geared toward helping the student to attain the set of necessary English skills allowing them to continue studying at a Bachelor-level. Our EAP Training programs seek to develop the English skills of the student to such extent that he or she should be able to pass a B2-level (CEFR) or IELTS 5.5 proficiency test after two semesters. When the student is found to have gained the appropriate amount of competence, he is or she will ‘graduate’ with a Declaration of Completion of the program. Please note that the completion of this course does not guarantee admission to any medical school.

International students will undoubtedly find Budapest an attractive city with fantastic food and excellent entertainment opportunities. It also presents a very thriving intellectual environment. Study groups and even individual students always find a way to gain access to the city’s best libraries to conduct research or start writing a paper. Students with a limited knowledge in sciences (mathematics, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, anatomy) are highly recommended to spend two academic semesters attending an EAP Training Course, which helps them prepare for the rigorous entrance examination of Semmelweis University, Debrecen University, or Szeged University.

Our Pre-Medical Program can be taken by EEU and non-EEU nationals.

A total of 800 very demanding contact hours are offered alongside shortened winter and summer breaks. Our aim is to ensure that you have enough knowledge and better language competence by the end of the year in order to successfully pass the Entrance Examination and participate in superior education. Our instructors consist of experienced professors with a practical background and recent graduates (holding a double degree, for example, English and Biology, English and Chemistry).

All classes are given in English. Self-directed classes and extracurricular (“make-up”) classes are available, too.

Career opportunities

Those having completed the English for Academic Purposes Training program will be able to continue their higher education in Hungary and abroad. Once they earn a degree the following possibilities will enfold: journalism, tourism, education in non-state founded schools, government organizations, diplomacy and any other jobs that do not require degree-specific skills. Getting a job is also dependent on the continuous studies of the student following the foundation year.

Job examples

Job postings can be applied for if the student hold a university degree only. Completion of the English for Academic Purposes Training program will allow the student to continue his or her studies on a Bachelor level.

Curriculum

What classes are offered?

The pre-med program prepares the student to take the entrance examination required to participate in a regular degree program at a medical university of the student’s choice. The program consists of a selection of courses related to natural sciences, such as chemistry, biology, mathematics, and a smaller portion of humanities, like history and economics. Understanding that physicians need a comprehensive understanding of disciplines marginally related to humanities, medical schools often look for students with diverse educational experiences.

The program concentrates on preparing students for their further scientific studies in English. It aims to provide students with the appropriate terminology of biology, chemistry, physics and medical English. Besides the field-specific English classes, students will also attend regular English classes to improve their communicational and study skills, vital for their further studies in medical school.

Application procedure

After the applicant has decided which program he or she would like to apply for, and made sure all entrance requirements are met, the applicant is requested to send the required documents to admissions@btk.elte.hu.

Should the applicant want to apply in person, he or she can do so at the International Student Services office during office hours (see contact tab for more information).

Applications will only be processed if the application fee (150EUR; non-refundable) has been transferred to the Faculty’s bank account.

Keep in mind that processing the application might take 3 to 5 weeks—please make sure to apply on time if you require a visa to travel to Hungary.
